An Assessment of ERA5 Reanalysis for Antarctic Near-Surface Air Temperature
نویسندگان
چکیده
The European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) released its latest reanalysis dataset named ERA5 in 2017. To assess the performance of Antarctica, we compare near-surface temperature data from and ERA-Interim with measured 41 weather stations. has a strong linear relationship monthly observations, statistical significant correlation coefficients (p < 0.05) are higher than 0.95 at all stations selected. shows regional differences, correlations high West Antarctica low East Antarctica. Compared ERA5, slightly observations Antarctic Peninsula. agrees well austral spring, 0.90 bias lower 0.70 °C. trend is consistent that which cooling dominates while warming exists Peninsula except during summer. Generally, can effectively represent changes three subregions. Although bias, play an important role as powerful tool to explore climate change sparse situ observations.

[1] A new monthly 1 1 Antarctic near-surface temperature reconstruction for 1960– 2005 is presented. The use of numerical model fields to establish spatial relationships between fifteen continuous observational temperature records and the voids to which they are interpolated inherently accounts for the effects of the atmospheric circulation and topography on temperature variability. Employing a...
متن کاملAn Assessment of HIRS Surface Air Temperature with USCRN Data
The surface air temperature retrievals from the High Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS) are evaluated by using observations from the U.S. Climate Reference Network (USCRN) for the period of 2006 to 2013. One year of the USCRN data is also used as ground truth in calibrating retrieval biases. The final retrieval results show that mean biases of HIRS retrievals from comparisons to all s...
متن کاملA comparative study of quantitative mapping methods for bias correction of ERA5 reanalysis precipitation data
This study evaluates the ability of different quantitative mapping (QM) methods as a bias correction technique for ERA5 reanalysis precipitation data. Climate type and geographical location can affect the performance of the bias correction method due to differences in precipitation characteristics. For this purpose, ERA5 reanalysis precipitation data for the years 1989-2019 for 10 selected syno...
متن کاملEvaluation of MODIS Land Surface Temperature Data to Estimate Near-Surface Air Temperature in Northeast China
Air temperature (Tair) near the ground surface is a fundamental descriptor of terrestrial environment conditions and one of the most widely used climatic variables in global change studies. The main objective of this study was to explore the possibility of retrieving high-resolution Tair from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) land surface temperature (LST) products, cove...
